"best described as ambient electronica with elements of pop-jazz and dubwise reggae and the inclusion of some Spanish and classical guitar...a haunting, eerie, dusky mood...a likable, noteworthy contribution to ambient electronica." --- Alex Henderson
Composer and singer/songwriter Deborah Thurlow is set
to release her vocal debut single on June 25th. A departure from her previous releases of
modern classical/jazz music, “Where Were You?” is an emotionally compelling
response to the catastrophe of 9/11 where she tastefully and simply asks ‘where
were you?’ when the towers came down. “Where
Were You?” presents the listener with a series of images of ordinary every-day
activities juxtaposed with expressions of the ineffable feelings many
experienced on that tragic day. It is a personal
response and a eulogy of sorts to those that perished, and a sorrowful yet
courageous acknowledgement that words were inadequate to describe the universal
emotions that so many of us felt during the unfolding of those horrific events
of that day. The song is also an
inviting and seductive preview of Deborah’s highly anticipated upcoming CD, Collage,
to be released in the fall of 2013.
As
Ian Wagstaff commented in Horn Magazine,
“. . . combine the Dalai Lama with
Berlioz, throw in some Hebraic influence . . . Deborah Thurlow uses an eclectic
mix of instruments, from the shofar to the Tibetan singing bowl, . . . [with] a
strong electronic influence.” And now
with the same exploratory spirit and creativity Deborah is branching out in yet
another direction and expressing another side of her musical personality. Along with her soulful vocals and engaging songwriting
skills “Where Were You?” features seamless performances by Loren Daniels on
acoustic piano, Alex Gressel on upright bass, and the drums of Andrea Valentini. “Where Were You?” is yet another of Deborah’s
infectious stylistic excursions that expands and furthers the trajectory of her
expressive musical vision, and it is sure to intrigue her listeners and wet
their appetites for the release of her upcoming CD release.
Deborah
Thurlow is a composer/horn player/vocalist/songwriter/music educator and freelance
musician in the New York City area and in Europe. She starred in her own one act play with
music, The Creative Void Of The Planet
Earth, which was featured in an Equity Showcase run of seven performances
by the New Media Repertory Company under the direction of Miranda
MacDermot. She has also performed with
the Pina Baush Ballet Company, Franz Kaman, David Amram, Anthony Davis, and The
New York Composers Orchestra, to name but a few. She studied both composition and
orchestration with John Corigliano at Lehman College and has received grants
from Meet the Composer, ASCAP Awards, William Petshek Music Fund and the Puffin
Cultural Foundation. Her modern classical/jazz
works are published with Ensemble Publications/Nichols Music Company and DSM
Producers who cater to the film and TV industry exclusively. As a music educator Deborah teaches
privately, at public schools, colleges and neighborhood performing arts
schools. She devotes much of her time to
teaching music to underprivileged youths while continuing to pursue her music
career in a way that inspires her students as well as her fans. “Where Were You?” is a sparkling debut of Deborah’s
vocal and songwriting talents and an enticing preview of her soon to be
released CD Collage.
Following GI Blythe’s recent announcement
to provide periodic free music downloads of songs from their successful CD
release Lost in Space, and the
offering of their first, “Run Rabbit Run,” they are now providing a second free
cut written by Geoff Blythe. “Falling” is
a sardonic, relentless groove from start to finish, the tale of a profligate upstart
who may—or may not—have reached the end of his adventurism. In the wake of a highly successful national
radio campaign and last year’s triumphant CD release tour of the East Coast,
beginning with a CD release party at Connolly’s Klub 45 in New York City and closing
with a CD release concert at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY, GI Blythe
will be offering further free song downloads in the months to come, so stay
tuned! As many fans are already aware, GI
Blythe is a group
of seasoned musical pros from a variety of impressive musical backgrounds who’ve
come together to fuse a high-energy hybrid of wit and horn-centric good-time
Rock, which is amply demonstrated on Lost
in Space.
Lost in Space is an exhilarating introduction
to a band that has already piqued some discerning ears and raised some diverse
eyebrows. Along with the humorously
macabre “Run
Rabbit Run” and the ironic and witty “Falling” the CD contains other original tunes written
by Blythe, Archie Brown & Jim Paterson—including the instrumental “Freedom
March” with some swinging, scorching Jazzy moments—and their funky and haunting
“The Narrative of G. Bristol Groot (Vampyre)” (also a video available on
YouTube), which like many cuts on the album just might bring you out of your
chair. So be forewarned: before you put on this music be sure to put on
your dancing shoes!
GI Blythe is
a band of exceptional players from the U.K. and the U.S. that have outrageous
chops and share a pure joy of making music that is both exuberant and street
savvy. Several members of GI Blythe have
worked together in various music settings over the years—including Dexy’s
Midnight Runners and Black 47—and along with Geoffrey Blythe have collectively
played and/or recorded with a number of diverse artists from Elvis Costello,
Paul Simon and Nick Lowe to Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and The Funk Brothers
(of Motown fame), to name but a few. The
band’s foundation is provided by drummer Crispin ‘the Pump’ Taylor and
bassist Joe ‘Bear Claw’ Burcaw—and these guys cook! They provide a solid pocket that energetically
propels the band and allows lead singer Archie Brown and the horns of Blythe
and ‘Big Jim’ Paterson (trombone & backup vocals), along with the keys of
Pete Levin and guitars of Larry Baeder, to alternately punch the rhythm section
and float above the smooth ride effortlessly.
Although the band’s players are accomplished pros,
they retain a raucous, authentic post-punk attitude resulting in a sound that’s
soulful, sometimes Jazzy (with tasteful flashes of dissonance—and a funky
beat!), rockin’ and audacious—all at the same time!

Stellar new band on the scene. GI Blythe takes storytelling and puts it to funky new music. The band members have resumes to impress the masses, from Dexys Midnight Runners, to Elvis Costello, to Miles Davis and Jaco Pastorius. Black 47 makes a showing amongst others. www.giblythe.com
Following GI Blythe’s recent announcement to provide periodic free music downloads of songs from their successful CD release Lost in Space, and the offering of their first, “Run Rabbit Run,” they are now providing a second free song written by Geoff Blythe. The title cut “Lost in Space” is an ethereal and majestic mosaic that charts a man’s existential journey through the cosmic fabric of life and creation only to realize that he is “lost.” In the wake of a highly successful national radio campaign and last year’s triumphant CD release tour of the East Coast, beginning with a CD release party at Connolly’s Klub 45 in New York City and closing with a CD release concert at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY, GI Blythe will be offering further free song downloads in the months to come, so stay tuned!
